Autopsy: Hannah's mom bound, bashed.

Even though this blog post is not about Hannah's mom here is a link if you care to find out about the story that i captured your attention with! http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/24/justice/hannah-anderson-family-autopsy/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

and on to the content.

The overall subject is portrayed very neutrally in the frame. The house is not directly on one of the intersections of the lines. The things that capture the eye of the viewer are places in the background like the field and the water. The eye is also slightly drawn to the house but not as much as the background around the house. The house and the field are the things that are foregrounded in the picture verses the water and the islands that are backgrounded. The image wants us to think about how much nature is around the pre-cogs now that they have left the pre crime system. Maybe how small they are in the scheme of things. Some of the elements like the house might be a little bit more important than the water and the islands, only because something actually important is happening in them. In this scene there is a very natural use of lighting. This natural usage of lightning makes the small house look more realistic and gives the audience a sense of being able to relate to the sunset. This type of shot is definitely a extreme long shot. The effect of this shot is that the audience understands the background and scenery more. This shot helps establish the isolated nature feel of the scene. The house is included in the crane to contribute to the event happening in the shot, it allows us to make the connection that the pre-cogs are living inside and that they are isolated and in the middle of nowhere.

  1. Matthew: your attention grabber obviously needs some work. It's a sad, grisly and depressing current event; more importantly, it has NO connection to your thoughts on the "Minority Report" still.

Writing an effective blog post means capturing your audience's attention with something that's relevant to the topic being discussed. Stop by and chat if you need help with this.

Regarding your image, can you say more about the lighting and the connotation of the natural setting? How is this such an interesting contrast to the futuristic elements of the film? And there's so much more you can say about the water motif.

  2. I understand now that my attention grabber is flawed and will work on that next time. Also my image was a very interesting juxtaposition to compare Anderton with his wife in their tech-ed out room followed by the pre-cogs alone in nature. The whole film was fast paced and had lots of high tech machinery and then it turns into this vastly different extreme wide shot that slowly zooms out and almost shocks the audience with how much nature was captured in the shot. The water motif that they are surrounded by at the end could depict how they have moved up from their previous lives. They used to be submerged in water all the time but now that the pre-crime program has decayed, they are now outside of the water.

  3. Right -- it's so interesting how there are shots in the film that are clearly futuristic and then there are shots -- like this one -- that look like they could be from a movie in the mid-20th century.
